ABOUT YOUR COACH: DARREN JAMES

Hi, I'm an online and in person Biomechanics Specialist (S&C coach) who helps everyday endurance runners overcome chronic joint pain, eliminate muscle imbalances, and unlock their ultimate physical potential. After overcoming six years of debilitating sciatic nerve pain and transforming my own non-athletic frame, I dedicated over 12 years to mastering the science of functional movement. Today, I use my signature 3 Pillars of Health & Strength system to help clients break the cycle of repetitive injuries and build their strongest, most resilient bodies.
My Story: Overcoming the Injury Cycle
We all know the absolute helplessness of a body breaking down. Chronic injury doesn't just limit your physical freedom; it drags you down into daily negative thoughts and robs you of doing what you love.
For six years, I lived that exact reality. I battled severe, recurring sciatic pain that constantly flared up during cricket matches. I would start the day feeling strong, get through the warmup, but the moment I made a diving effort or a repeat sprint, a sharp twinge would strike my lower back and hip. That twinge rapidly devolved into a nagging pain, causing a severe loss of power and strength on one side of my body.
The worst part wasn't just the physical toll—it was the mental weight. Every time my body failed, I felt like I was letting my teammates down. Like many, I made the mistake of playing through the pain, which only prolonged my rehabilitation and made the damage worse.
Reconnecting the Dots
Determined to stop the guesswork, I went on a quest to find a permanent solution. I tested a shopping list of traditional training methodologies:
- Traditional weightlifting
- Animal flow & gymnastics
- Callisthenics & pilates
- Yoga & standard rehab protocols
While each had merits, they all had limitations; none solved my nerve and joint dysfunctions. I realized I needed a completely different approach. I stopped looking at muscles in isolation and shifted my focus to integrative, movement-based exercises designed around human evolutionary basics: walking, running, and throwing.
By looking at the body as a whole system, I finally reconnected the dots. I discovered that my core was weak, I had been stacking my spine incorrectly for years, and my glutes were completely inactive on both sides.
Embracing Weaknesses to Build Athleticism
I will be the first to admit: I am not a naturally athletic person.
Growing up playing Australian Rules Football, I was easily the slowest sprinter on the team. In my teens, I lacked foundational body strength, and building muscle on my light frame felt painstakingly slow. However, these natural disadvantages only fueled my determination to discover what I was missing to achieve the explosiveness and athleticism I truly desired.
The turning point came during a blunt conversation with a fellow trainer. He looked at me and said: “The problem is you're focusing too much on your strengths.” (At the time, that just meant training my biceps!) “You need to put your time and effort into your weaknesses.”
That reality check changed everything. I shifted my entire focus toward mastering:
- Core Stability: Re-learning how to stack the spine correctly.
- Glute-Base Strength: Activating and powering up the hips.
- Total Body Coordination: Forging a bulletproof mind-muscle connection.
- Agility & Gait Cycle: Correcting how my feet and ankles interact with the ground.
